Aurora Show by MatiasSieppi Aurora Show by MatiasSieppi
Five minutes after I took this picture these auroras have moved out of the shot and there was just a thin green line across the southern sky. That thin line was really bright, I took a few shot of it with the same settings as this one and the auroras came out over overexposed.

Canon 5D Mk II
17-40
f/4, 30s, ISO 3200

Beautiful! I miss seeing these. I used to live in Ontario, so I got to see the northern lights fairly frequently, but I have never seen them where I live now. It's one of the biggest things I miss from home. This picture captures them perfectly. :)

Just take the next flight to north :) I shot this scene in Muonio, Finland, we have about 60-70 percent change to see auroras every night. If you go northern Norway, like Tromso, you'll have about 90 percent change to auroras. If it's not cloudy.

I was wondering why your ISO was so high with the speed you are using but I saw that you mentioned that the aurora was weak. Excellent photo. I love the reflection

I wanted to keep the shutter speed under 30 seconds, because I didn't want star trails. Auroras move pretty fast and with a long exposure they can cause grayish areas in the photo, left part of the sky in this shot one is good a example [link] . Sometimes auroras are so weak that they are barely visible to naked eye, just a little bit brighter than rest of the sky. Then you have to use high ISO to make them visible and keep exposure under 30 seconds. These were the brightest I've seen for a long time. f/4 isn't ideal for night photography, f/2.8 or wider would work better.
